Just Another Wednesday Morning

Introducing my right hand lady and all together wonderful friend and TLC buddy, Jill Mann from Together for Peace guest blogging tonight. Enjoy….

Every Wednesday at ToastLoveCoffee is different and this Wednesday was different and precious in many ways. Most importantly, we were all back together as a team after last week’s disruption and dramatic events (you can read about that in previous blogs if you’re not already up to speed with our journey). I hope we never have a week like that again. We were all so delighted to be back at the cafe and to have Anita with us. We set the cafe up swiftly, then had a coffee together before the doors opened. It was as if nothing had happened, and yet I think we all knew that this week was different and that the existence of TLC was both really important for the issues that it addresses and incredibly special for the relationships that are being formed between ourselves and those that come through the door.

Once the doors opened a steady stream of people arrived, regular customers, their children and new faces. I often arrange to have at least one meeting whilst at the cafe as I love to introduce people to each other and see what ideas and connections emerge. And today was more fruitful day than I had imagined. A number of people arrived from different organisations all supporting the community in different and yet complimentary ways. We pulled a couple of tables together and pooled ideas and stories from IntoUniversity and St Giles Trust. Then a local Councillor from neighbouring Chapeltown arrived and pulled up another chair and the conversations continued. After a while Anna joined us and as the conversations and ideas developed further we started to discuss running TLC in Chapeltown… (for any of you that are familiar with World Cafe or facilitation practices, this was like an organic version and the kind of event that facilitators dream of, people talking about issues they care about open heartedly and then suggesting steps forward together). TLC is on the one hand just a coffee & cake shop in a portacabin on Wednesday morning, and yet it is so much more than that and potentially so much more too. We are just getting started with this venture and no Wednesdays are ever alike. So join us next week for just another Wednesday. And watch this space, TLC may pop up in other locations on different days of the week…
