Harehills Walkabout

We spent some time meeting our neighbouring shops and organisations last week, taking fliers about the volunteering opportunities, and discussing what the TLC cafe will be about.
From hairdressers and health and beauty shops, to chemists and opticians, to local community organisations, the overwhelming response to hearing about the cafe opening is ” This is exactly what Harehills needs. We can’t wait until it opens.” Everyone was keen to hear that there would be some fresh homemade food and high quality coffee coming to the area.
We heard plenty of stories from shop workers who regularly chat to customers who are socially isolated, and in need a hot drink, human warmth and a listening ear. “Great, we’ll be able to point them in the direction of the cafe now” several people said.
We met many shop staff who are acutely aware of the need to make time to talk with their customers, reach out to more to people, and who have a unique first hand insight into the lives of some of the LS8 community.
All the more exciting is that we are currently recruiting some amazing volunteers. By joining the TLC team, volunteers will have a really positive experience and have the opportunity to build skills and confidence. The more volunteers we have, the longer we can open, and provide some TLC to the many organisations and people who are waiting for what the cafe has to offer.
